Sivas Massacre Remembered on the 33rd Anniversary

On the 33rd anniversary of the Sivas (Madımak) Massacre, we remember with respect the 35 people who lost their lives on 2 July 1993. Thirty-three of the victims were artists, writers and intellectuals, while two were employees of the Madımak Hotel, where they were burned to death by a violent mob.

As we commemorate those who were killed, we reaffirm our commitment to keeping their memory alive through the ongoing struggle for justice, democracy and freedom.

Thirty-three years on, justice has still not been achieved. Successive governments have failed to fully uncover the truth, hold all those responsible to account, or confront the state’s role in the massacre. Although the legal process has been allowed to lapse, the demand for justice remains alive in the conscience of the people and will continue until all those responsible are held accountable and the demands of the victims’ families are met.

We will never forget the Sivas Massacre. We will never allow it to be forgotten.
