Comedian Deniz Göktaş Detained Following Viral Stand Up Performance

Turkish stand up comedian Deniz Göktaş was detained at Istanbul Airport today after returning from a trip abroad, amid a growing crackdown on critical and satirical voices in Turkey. The detention comes days after his latest show, Ölü Deniz, attracted millions of online views and became the focus of a campaign by pro-government figures.

According to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Göktaş is being investigated on allegations of “publicly insulting religious values adopted by a section of the population” under Article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code and “insulting the president” under Article 299. Following his detention at passport control, he was taken to Istanbul Security Directorate headquarters for questioning.

The detention has renewed concerns about freedom of expression in Turkey, particularly the use of criminal laws relating to alleged insults against religion or the presidency. Human rights organisations and free speech advocates have frequently criticised these provisions, arguing that they are used to restrict dissenting voices, journalists, artists and comedians. The case against Göktaş evidences the shrinking space for political satire and artistic expression in the country.

The comedian’s detention follows a wider pattern of legal actions against critics of the government and highlights the increasing risks faced by artists who use humour and satire to comment on political and social issues in Turkey.
