At least one journalist is detained every day. While pressure on certain television channels and newspapers has increased recently, journalist Barış Terkoğlu, who produces independent YouTube broadcasts, spoke about corruption carried out in public spaces.
Despite the fact that it was a report approved by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Terkoğlu was detained on the grounds of the video report he produced.
Many journalists, like Barış Terkoğlu—who is known for his opposition stance—are under investigation. All journalists who criticize Erdoğan and the government are being silenced through detentions and threats.
Recently, a trustee was appointed to the TELE 1 television channel and its Editor-in-Chief, Merdan Yanardağ, was arrested. In addition, veteran journalist of 50 years, Fatih Altaylı, was arrested and sent to prison on charges of insulting Erdoğan.
Press freedom in Turkey is under serious threat. Any journalist who does not work with the government or publish content in line with its wishes can be detained at any moment.
International press organizations should not remain silent in the face of attacks on the free press in Turkey.
