On May 31st, the Solidarity with the People of Turkey (SPOT) Annual General Meeting brought together trade unionists, activists, and supporters committed to international solidarity and workers’ rights. Held at NEU Hamilton House in London, the meeting underscored the shared struggles of workers in Turkey, the UK, and around the globe.
Powerful Guest Contributions
Mehmet Türkmen
President of the independent textiles union BIRTEK-SEN, Mehmet Türkmen addressed attendees via video link due to being under house arrest in Turkey. Türkmen expressed deep gratitude for the support shown by UK trade unions and outlined the ongoing plight of low-paid workers globally. He highlighted how multinational corporations are exploiting supply chains in Turkey to create conditions akin to those in Bangladesh or China, suppressing wages and eroding workers’ rights in pursuit of profit.
Liz Wheatley
Chair of the Unison Camden Branch and Unison International Committee, Liz Wheatley emphasized the need to resist wage suppression and defend the right to unionize without fear. Announcing her intention to join the SPOT Steering Committee, Wheatley urged trade unions and progressive organizations to continue their support, stating:
“Together we can build a very different future for workers here and in Turkey.”
SPOT’s Focus for the Year Ahead
The AGM also outlined SPOT’s key priorities moving forward:
Defending Democracy in Turkey: Supporting civil society and grassroots movements.
Worker Solidarity: Building stronger links between UK and Turkish trade unions.
Raising Awareness: Promoting education and outreach in the UK about the political and economic realities in Turkey.
Action and Campaigns: Coordinating strategic responses to human rights abuses and anti-worker policies.
SPOT reaffirmed its commitment to standing in solidarity with all those resisting oppression, exploitation, and authoritarianism—across borders and industries.
