According to the new law passed in parliament as the 11th Judicial Reform Package, many criminals—including murderers—are being released from prison. It is stated that a total of 65,000 people, including thieves, pickpockets, and fraudsters, will be freed.
Under the new Judicial Package, political offenders will continue to remain in prison by being classified as “terror offenders.” It has also been stated that child and female abusers will not benefit from this law.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s prisons, which have a capacity of around 200,000 inmates, currently hold more than 300,000 prisoners. There are comments suggesting that by releasing some ordinary criminals, space is being made for political prisoners who criticize the government and Erdoğan in the coming period.
