As Solidarity with the People of Turkey (SPOT), we condemn the Turkish court decision to remove Özgür Özel as leader of the CHP, Turkey’s main opposition party, and the police violence used to forcibly remove the democratically elected leadership from party headquarters in Ankara.
We are calling on President Erdoğan and the Turkish government to reverse the court ruling against Özgür Özel, end attacks on democratic opposition, restore judicial independence, release political prisoners, and protect democratic and academic freedoms.
We call on MPs, trade unions, and democratic organisations in Britain to speak out, raise these issues in Parliament, and support the planned delegation to the Turkish Embassy.
We will be presenting a statement to the Turkish embassy in the coming days calling for an end to the repression of democratic opposition.
