Following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, seven journalists who were covering the protests in front of the municipal building in Istanbul have been detained.
Most of these journalists are photojournalists who were there solely to report on the demonstrations.
While millions of people across Turkey are protesting against Erdoğan and his government’s repression, efforts are also being made to prevent news about these protests from being reported.
In many demonstrations, police and secret service agents were assigned to provoke the protests. It is believed that these arrests are an attempt to prevent journalists from documenting the Erdoğan administration’s provocation efforts.
Not only journalists but also 1,700 people have been detained in the past week, with approximately 500 of them arrested. Reports indicate that most of these detainees are students. In Istanbul alone, 172 people have been arrested.
