Hunger threshold in Turkey: 29,828 TL
Announced minimum wage: 28,075 TL
The minimum wage, which is set at the end of each year and comes into force from February, has been announced.
The minimum wage, covering 8.5 million workers, has been set at 28,075 TL. This means that these workers and their families will face hunger.
Once again in Turkey, where capital has made record profits, hunger has been imposed on workers.
The Minister does not hesitate to lie
Minister of Labour and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan once again lied openly to workers by saying, “We did not let workers be crushed by inflation.” While inflation stands at 31 percent, the minimum wage increase was only 27 percent.
The demands of international capital groups have also been met. Morgan Stanley suggested a 20–25 percent increase in the minimum wage, while JP Morgan proposed 25 percent. The government set it at 27 percent. Workers, however, demanded at least a 50 percent increase.
Last year, when the minimum wage was set at 22,104 TL, it was just above the hunger threshold. This year, it has been set 1,750 TL below the hunger threshold. In the coming year, the Turkish working class will face hunger.
