Dozens more people have been detained ahead of the NATO summit in Turkey on 7–8 July.

During overnight police raids on their homes, members of several political parties and journalists who were planning to protest the NATO summit were taken into custody.

Those detained include members of the Labour Party (EMEP), Labour Youth, the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP), People’s Houses (Halkevleri), the Socialist Labour Party (SEP), the Revolutionary Youth Association, the Revolutionary Movement magasine, the Private Sector Teachers’ Union, and the Progressive Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD).

Among those detained are also academic Sibel Özbudun, writer Temel Demirer, and journalists Ceren Erdoğdu and Buse Söğütlü.

In an effort to present a favourable image to NATO and Donald Trump, Erdoğan’s government has spent days concealing poverty along the route from the airport to the summit venue by erecting large panels on both sides of the road.

Meanwhile, those protesting NATO are being detained one by one in overnight police operations. So far, hundreds of people have been taken into custody, while dozens have been remanded in pre-trial detention.
