Attacks targeting the opposition in Turkey continue. So far, dozens of CHP municipalities have been subjected to operations, and hundreds of people have been detained.
Most recently, early this morning, the homes of officials from the CHP-run Ataşehir District Municipality in Istanbul were raided, and 18 people were taken into custody.
The reason given for the operation, in which Mayor Onursal Adıgüzel was also detained, was “bribery and bid rigging.”
The Erdoğan government is trying to silence the opposition with allegations, most of which turn out to be unfounded.
It continues to detain opposition trade unionists, journalists, environmentalists, and municipal officials.
Over the past year, while hundreds of people and dozens of mayors have been detained, no members of the AKP or its coalition partner MHP have been taken into custody, despite corruption in AKP municipalities being exposed.
Erdoğan is trying to eliminate the opposition in order to remain in power again in the general elections to be held in 2028.
